The first published selection from Mailer’s “Lipton’s Journal” — the more than 700 entries of cannabis-fuelled self-analysis he kept from December 1954 to March 1955, at the crossroads between Barbary Shore and the contract for The Deer Park. The TLS prints an editors’ headnote and a run of numbered entries tracing Mailer’s preoccupations — genius against conformity (his “H” and “S”), the saintly and the psychopathic, bisexuality, his father, and the seedbed of “The White Negro” and Advertisements for Myself. It is the trailer for the full edition, Lipton’s, A Marijuana Journal (2024); a redacted version followed in January 2023.
