Mailer's second daughter, Danielle, is born to Adele on 16 March. In the summer Dissent publishes "The White Negro" (57.1), the essay — grown out of "Lipton's" — that defines the hipster and becomes Mailer's most influential. He also completes a first draft of a stage version of The Deer Park (57.2).

Summer — “The White Negro”
“The White Negro: Superficial Reflections on the Hipster” (57.1) appears in Dissent 4 (summer), 276–93 — Mailer’s most celebrated and castigated essay, the fullest statement of his hipster idea, with its origins in the 1954–55 “Lipton’s” journal. Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights Books would issue it as a standalone pamphlet in 1959 (59.8a).
December — the Deer Park play
5 December — A New York Times article by Louis Calta, “Mailer Finishes First Stage Work” (57.2), reports that Mailer has completed a four-act stage adaptation of The Deer Park, then being read by a Broadway producer.
