Letter to Herman Kogan
An open letter to Herman Kogan, book-review editor of the Chicago Sun-Times, rebutting reviewers who claimed Mailer had "cleaned up" The Deer Park to satisfy Putnam's. Mailer says he sent it to "twenty-odd newspapers."

Mailer complains about comments in reviews of The Deer Park (55.4) suggesting that he had “‘cleaned up’ the book to satisfy the demands of G. P. Putnam’s, my publisher.” He explains that the book was not bowdlerized and is in fact fifty pages longer than the suppressed Rinehart version. In Advertisements for Myself (59.13) Mailer recalls that the letter was sent to “twenty-odd newspapers”.
