Rinehart & Company
New York trade publisher (1929–1960, descended from Farrar & Rinehart) that published Mailer's first two novels — The Naked and the Dead (1948) and Barbary Shore (1951).

Rinehart & Company published The Naked and the Dead on 6 May 1948 (721 pages, $4.00) — the first Mailer book. The dedication thanks “William Raney, Theodore S. Amussen, and Charles Devlin for the aid and encouragement given me at various times in the writing of this novel”; the first two were Rinehart editors.

The firm issued a Rinehart press release on Mailer that is quoted in Current Biography 1948 (48.8), and ran the “Major Literary Event” and related NAD advertising campaigns preserved in media/images/ephemera/; see the NAD page for the full ad gallery.
Barbary Shore followed in May 1951. The relationship ended in November 1954, when Rinehart suppressed The Deer Park — already set for publication on 14 February 1955 — over six lines of sexual description; after six further rejections the novel was accepted by Walter Minton of G. P. Putnam’s Sons (see Days 1954).
Rinehart & Company merged with Henry Holt and John C. Winston in 1960 to form Holt, Rinehart and Winston. A later Henry Holt reissue of NAD with a new Mailer introduction appears as Lennon 98.6.
Mary Roberts Rinehart — the mystery novelist related to the family of the publisher’s founders — was one of the seven writers who named NAD among their 1948 favorite reading (see 48.13).
