Don Carpenter was a West Coast novelist who corresponded regularly with Mailer in the 1960s. Mailer saw Carpenter and the Beat poet Michael McClure in San Francisco during the summer of 1963. His 15 January 1964 letter to Carpenter (in the Letters collection) describes the strain of producing the An American Dream serial and invites candid criticism of the installments.
