Edwin Seaver
Editor of the annual Cross-Section anthology, who twice gave Mailer book appearances: "A Calculus at Heaven" in the 1944 volume (L.B. Fischer) and the advance excerpt from The Naked and the Dead in the 1948 volume (Simon and Schuster).
Seaver edited Cross-Section: A Collection of New American Writing, which published Mailer’s senior-year novella “A Calculus at Heaven” (Lennon 44.1, New York: L.B. Fischer, April 1944) — Mailer’s first book appearance — and, four years later, the advance excerpt “The Naked and the Dead” (48.1, Simon and Schuster, March 1948), a much-anthologized set-piece.

Seaver’s memoir So Far So Good: Recollections of a Life in Publishing (Westport, Conn.: Lawrence Hill, 1986) contains his recollections of Cross-Section and of Mailer. Mailer’s comments on Seaver appear in Advertisements for Myself (59.13), 28–29.
