L.B. Fischer
Short-lived New York trade publisher (active 1941–1949) that issued the 1944 Cross-Section: A Collection of New American Writing, edited by Edwin Seaver — the anthology in which Mailer's "A Calculus at Heaven" (44.1) appeared, making it Mailer's first book appearance.
L.B. Fischer, founded in New York in 1941 by Louis Birk, Jacob Fischer, and others as a mid-list trade house, published the first volume of Edwin Seaver‘s Cross-Section: A Collection of New American Writing (April 1944), which included “A Calculus at Heaven” (Lennon 44.1) on pages 317–53 — Mailer’s first book appearance. Seaver’s 1948 Cross-Section, which carried the advance excerpt from The Naked and the Dead (48.1), was issued by Simon and Schuster, L.B. Fischer having ceased operations by then.
