George Plimpton, the writer, participatory journalist, and founding editor of The Paris Review, was a long-standing friend of Mailer. He delivered the remarks when Mailer received the Edward MacDowell Medal at Peterborough, New Hampshire, on 18 August 1973.
He quoted Mailer at length in his boxing book Shadow Box (Putnam’s, 1977; 77.13) — both men had covered the 1974 Ali–Foreman fight in Zaire.
