The MacDowell Colony, the artists’ residency in Peterborough, New Hampshire, awarded Mailer its Edward MacDowell Medal on 18 August 1973, “in recognition of the tremendous body and wide variety of work he has published to date.” John Leonard presented the medal and George Plimpton gave remarks; Mailer’s acceptance speech — which touched on an idea for a Watergate novel and on his fiftieth-birthday party — is partly reprinted in Some Honorable Men (76.5) and the foreword to The Time of Our Time (98.7).
