Jacqueline Kennedy — later Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis — was the subject of one of Mailer’s most-discussed early-1960s pieces, “An Evening with Jackie Kennedy” (62.14), and a recurring presence in his writing on the Kennedy circle (see “The Big Bite,” November 1963). His ambivalent fascination with her — equal parts admiration and the critic’s wish to see past the public image — runs through that work. The two remained acquainted into her years as a New York book editor; the photograph above dates from 1978.
