American heavyweight champion (1944-2011) who defeated Muhammad Ali in the first of their three bouts, the 8 March 1971 'Fight of the Century,' the subject of Mailer's 'Ego' and King of the Hill; a dedicatee of the latter.
Joe Frazier, world heavyweight champion, defeated Muhammad Ali by unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden on 8 March 1971 — the first of their three meetings, billed as the “Fight of the Century.” Mailer covered the bout in “Ego” (71.14) for Life and in the book King of the Hill (71.15), which he dedicated “For Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.”
