Muhammad Ali
Heavyweight champion boxer and cultural figure; a recurring subject and acquaintance of Mailer's, who covered his fights and wrote about him at length.
Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Clay) defeated Sonny Liston for the heavyweight championship in Miami on 25 February 1964, with Mailer in the audience. In late July 1965 Mailer arm-wrestled Ali in San Juan during a visit for the José Torres–Tom McNeeley fight (65.17). Ali would remain a recurring subject for Mailer, culminating in his coverage of the 1974 Ali–Foreman fight in The Fight (75.x), and a lifelong friendship.
