“Ego,” a nonfiction narrative in Life (19 March 1971), is Mailer’s account of the first Muhammad Ali–Joe Frazier fight — the “Fight of the Century” — held at Madison Square Garden on 8 March 1971. Some of the accompanying photographs were taken by Frank Sinatra. The piece was reprinted the following month as the book King of the Hill (71.15), and later in Existential Errands (72.7) and Pieces and Pontifications (82.19).
