José Torres, 1965

José “Chegüi” Torres, the Puerto Rican boxer, won the light-heavyweight championship by defeating Willie Pastrano on 30 March 1965. Mailer hosted his victory party at his Brooklyn Heights apartment, and the two became lifelong friends. Mailer attended the Torres–Tom McNeeley fight in San Juan in late July 1965 (see 65.17). Torres later became a writer, publishing a biography of Muhammad Ali.
