Norman Podhoretz
Editor of Commentary and a neoconservative critic; once a close friend of Mailer's, he chronicled their broken friendship in his 1999 memoir Ex-Friends.
Norman Podhoretz, longtime editor of Commentary and a leading neoconservative, was for years one of Mailer’s closest literary friends — Mailer recalled hearing of John F. Kennedy’s assassination while with him (96.2), and his early-1960s Commentary columns ran under Podhoretz’s editorship. Their friendship broke over politics, and Podhoretz gave it a “long, bitter discussion” in his memoir Ex-Friends: Falling Out with Allen Ginsberg, Lionel and Diana Trilling, Lillian Hellman, Hannah Arendt, and Norman Mailer (Free Press, 1999, 99.9a, 178–220; see 68.4).
