Mailer declined to be interviewed, but Dearborn conducted some fifty interviews — with his editors Roger Donald, Ralph Graves, and Jason Epstein; filmmakers D. A. Pennebaker and Jan Welt; close friends including Richard Stratton; and his estranged former friend Norman Podhoretz. Of his family, only his fourth wife Beverly Bentley gave her perspective. Mailer pushed back at the book (99.7; see 00.1).
