His December 2024 essay How Norman Mailer Changed the Face of Biography reappraises Mailer’s Marilyn (1973), Oswald’s Tale (1995), and Portrait of Picasso as a Young Man (1995), drawing on interviews with Carl Rollyson, Susan Mailer, and J.
