Carl Rollyson
Prolific American biographer and a biographer of Mailer; Professor Emeritus of Journalism at Baruch College, CUNY. He wrote the "Marilyn Monroe" chapter of Norman Mailer in Context (2021).
Carl Rollyson is Professor Emeritus of Journalism at Baruch College, CUNY, and has published biographies of Marilyn Monroe, Lillian Hellman, Martha Gellhorn, Norman Mailer, Rebecca West, Susan Sontag, Sylvia Plath, Amy Lowell, and William Faulkner, among others, as well as several studies of biography, including Confessions of a Serial Biographer.
His first Mailer book was The Lives of Norman Mailer (Paragon House, 1991, 91.22), the third book-length biography of Mailer — after Hilary Mills‘s (82.23) and Peter Manso‘s (85.13) — timed to appear with Harlot’s Ghost; Lennon found it strong on literary analysis but “quite derivative,” and Mailer was not interviewed for it. Decades later, for Norman Mailer in Context he contributed the chapter on Mailer’s Marilyn and his portraiture of Marilyn Monroe.
