Samuel Goldwyn
American film producer (1879–1974), founder of Goldwyn Pictures and a founding partner of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Mailer worked unsuccessfully with Jean Malaquais on scripts for Goldwyn during the Mailers' summer 1949 stay in Hollywood; Goldwyn rejected the screenplay but reportedly offered $15,000 for "the idea," which Mailer refused to sell.
Mailer later told Steven Marcus that the Hollywood experience — and Goldwyn’s rejection — fed into Barbary Shore “in some subterranean fashion”.
