Sergio Gutiérrez-Olivos was the Chilean ambassador to the United States, 1963–1965. Mailer’s 18 September 1963 note declining the ambassador’s round-table invitation (the earliest letter in the collection) is the first in which he mentions his plan to go to New England to work on the novel that became An American Dream.
