Warner Brothers took an option on the film rights to An American Dream in late May 1964 and, as Mailer wrote his Japanese translator on 27 January 1965, purchased them outright for a reported $200,000. The studio’s film version of the novel premiered on 26 August 1966. Mann Rubin wrote the first screenplay.
