Norman Mailer: Works and Days

Willie Morris

American writer and editor of Harper's Magazine (1967-1971); his March 1971 resignation followed the publication of Mailer's 'The Prisoner of Sex' as the magazine's cover story. He recounted the episode in New York Days (1993).

Willie Morris, the Mississippi-born writer, was editor of Harper’s Magazine from 1967 until March 1971, when he resigned amid a dispute with the magazine’s owners — a break to which the prominent display of Mailer’s “The Prisoner of Sex” (71.10) was, by most accounts, contributory. Mailer called Morris’s departure “the most depressing event in American letters in many a year” and never wrote for the magazine again (71.1171.13, 71.21). Morris gave his own retrospective account in New York Days (1993).
