Norman Mailer: Works and Days

Norman Mailer's Side on 'Harper's'

Mailer's letter to Saturday Review correcting errors in Stuart W. Little's account of Willie Morris's resignation, including the sum Life paid him for Of a Fire on the Moon: $450,000 from all sources.

“Norman Mailer’s Side on ‘Harper’s,’” a letter to the editor of the Saturday Review (12 June 1971), corrects errors in Stuart W. Little’s 10 April article on the resignation of Harper’s editor Willie Morris following “The Prisoner of Sex” (71.10). One correction concerns the sum Life paid Mailer for Of a Fire on the Moon (71.1): he received $450,000 from all sources — hardcover, softcover, serial, and foreign rights. Reprinted as “To the Saturday Review” in Existential Errands (72.7) and Pieces and Pontifications (82.19).
