Harper’s Magazine, the venerable American monthly, gave “The Prisoner of Sex” (71.10) its March 1971 cover and nearly the whole issue; the number sold out in nine days. The episode contributed to the resignation of editor Willie Morris and to Mailer’s vow never to write for the magazine again (71.11–71.13, 71.21).
