In January 1932 the Mailer family moved from Flatbush to 555 Crown Street in Crown Heights. Mailer attended P.S. 161 — graduating in June 1935 with a recorded IQ of 170 — and then Boys’ High School (September 1935 to June 1939); his bar mitzvah was held at Temple Shaari Zadek on 15 February 1936. Crown Heights remained the family home through Mailer’s Harvard years and his wartime absence.
