The New York borough that was Mailer's home for most of his life. The Mailer family moved from Long Branch to Brooklyn in 1928 — first to Flatbush, then from 1932 to Crown Heights — and Mailer returned to Brooklyn Heights as an adult, living his last decades partly at 142 Columbia Heights.
The Mailers moved from Long Branch, New Jersey to Brooklyn in the fall of 1928, settling first in Flatbush and, from January 1932, in Crown Heights. Mailer attended Boys’ High School in Brooklyn (1935–1939). From the spring of 1943 the family lived at 102 Pierrepont Street in Brooklyn Heights — Mailer’s base between his wartime and postwar travels — and he completed The Naked and the Dead in Brooklyn in 1947. In 1962 he bought 142 Columbia Heights in Brooklyn Heights, his principal home for the rest of his life.
