At a New York rally under the auspices of the National Council of the Arts, Sciences and Professions to hear appeals for the preservation of political freedom in education, Mailer, W.E.B. DuBois, and Harlow Shapley were among the speakers. Mailer: “It is a truism that fascism cannot come to America if our colleges and universities remain free.” An advertisement for the event appeared in the New York Star, 5 October 1948, listing Mailer first among the announced speakers, followed by F.O. Matthiessen, Shirley Graham, Louis Untermeyer, Howard Fast, and Philip Van Doren.
