Henry A. Wallace
Former U.S. Vice President (1941–45) and Progressive Party candidate for president in 1948; the subject of Mailer's political activism during the fall of 1948, including roughly thirty speeches in New York and California and three published essays and speech reports.
Mailer returned from France on 21 July 1948 in part to campaign for Wallace’s Progressive Party presidential bid. Over the following months he delivered roughly thirty speeches for Wallace in New York and California.
Mailer’s Wallace-related publications that year include “Do Professors Have Rights?” (48.9, New York Post, 8 October), “A Credo for the Living” (48.11, National Guardian, 18 October), and speech reports such as “Political Freedom for Teachers Urged” (48.10, New York Times, 11 October). Mailer also discussed the campaign in Lillian Ross’s New Yorker profile (48.12).
In 1949 Mailer would break with the Progressive Party after the Waldorf Peace Conference (see 1949).
