“A Course in Film-Making,” an essay in New American Review no. 12 (August 1971), contains Mailer’s most extensive reflections on the nature of film. The number was advertised in the New York Times of 16 August. The essay was incorporated into Maidstone: A Mystery (71.28) — the only differences being a hyphenation change (“Film-Making” to “FilmMaking”) and a reordering of the section “I: On the Theory” — and reprinted in Existential Errands (72.7) and Pieces and Pontifications (82.19).
