Mailer's Maidstone: Where's the Reality?
A transcript (introduced by Penny Cousineau) of Mailer laying out his film aesthetic before an audience at the Rochester Institute of Technology in fall 1972; published in Afterimage.
“Mailer’s ‘Maidstone’: Where’s the Reality?,” a transcript (with an introduction to the printed version by Penny Cousineau) of a conversation Mailer held with an audience at the Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall of 1972, published in Afterimage (March 1973). Mailer lays out his film aesthetic and notes, ruefully, that he had not realized until he read the reviews that “people who were bored with me to start with were in pain after an hour of watching me on the screen” — Andrew Sarris having observed that Mailer is no matinee idol.
