“A Harlot High and Low: Reconnoitering through the Secret Government,” an essay in New York (16 August 1976) on the CIA, Watergate, the assassination of J. F. K., and other mysteries, with a cover photograph of Mailer. The subtitle, Mailer said, was the editors’ work, and was dropped in reprints. The essay is the origin of his great CIA novel Harlot’s Ghost (91.26). Reprinted in Pieces and Pontifications (82.16) and The Time of Our Time (98.7).
