Mailer's four grandparents are born in Lithuania between 1858 and 1870 and emigrate in the 1890s — the Schneiders to the United States, the Mailers to South Africa and subsequently to England. Mailer's parents, both born in Lithuania in 1891, arrive in the U.S. as infant (Fan, 1894) and young adult (Barney, 1919) respectively, and marry in Manhattan on 12 February 1922.

The Schneiders (maternal)

1858 — Ida “Chaje” Kamrass, Mailer’s maternal grandmother, is born in Lithuania. She arrives in the U.S. in 1894.

1859 — Hyman “Chaim” Jehuda Schneider, Mailer’s maternal grandfather, is born in Lithuania. He begins studying at the Volozhin yeshiva at age seven and is ordained a rabbi by sixteen. He arrives in the U.S. in 1891.

The Mailers (paternal)

1865 — Benjamin Mailer, Mailer’s paternal grandfather, is born in Lithuania. He arrives in South Africa in 1890.

1870 — Celia Schapochsik, Mailer’s paternal grandmother, is born in Lithuania. She arrives in South Africa in 1890.

The parents

1891 — Isaac Barnett “Barney” Mailer is born in Lithuania on 18 January. After service in London during World War I, he arrives in the U.S. in 1919 and stays with his sister Anne and her husband, David Kessler.
