Ida "Chaje" Kamrass Schneider

Norman Mailer's maternal grandmother. Born in Lithuania in 1858; arrived in the United States in 1894; lived with her husband Rabbi Chaim Jehuda Schneider in Long Branch, New Jersey, where their daughter Fanny raised Norman through his first five years. Dies 28 May 1928.

Ida “Chaje” Kamrass was born in Lithuania in 1858 and arrived in the United States in 1894. With her husband Rabbi Chaim Jehuda Schneider (who arrived in 1891) she settled in Long Branch, New Jersey and raised daughter Fanny “Fan” Schneider, who married Barney Mailer in 1922. From Norman’s birth through 1928 the Mailers shared the Schneider household with Ida and Chaim.

28 May 1928 — Ida dies. Her husband Chaim follows on 22 November of the same year; the Mailers leave Long Branch for Brooklyn in the fall.
