Hyman "Chaim" Jehuda Schneider
Norman Mailer's maternal grandfather. Born in Lithuania in 1859, he studied at the Volozhin yeshiva from age seven and was a rabbi by sixteen; he arrived in the United States in 1891 and settled in Long Branch, New Jersey with the Schneider family, where Norman's mother Fanny grew up and Norman was born. Dies 22 November 1928.
Hyman “Chaim” Jehuda Schneider — often referred to in Lennon’s RTF simply as Rabbi Schneider — was born in Lithuania in 1859. He began studies at the celebrated Volozhin yeshiva at age seven and was ordained a rabbi by sixteen. He emigrated to the United States in 1891. With his wife Ida “Chaje” Kamrass (b. 1858, U.S. 1894), he settled in Long Branch, New Jersey, where the Schneider family operated a cluster of beach cottages and hotels.
From Norman’s birth in January 1923 through the move to Brooklyn in fall 1928, the Mailers shared the Schneider household in Long Branch — first on Morris Avenue and then at “Kingsley Court,” the beach-cottage cluster at Beach and Ocean Avenues that Fan’s parents owned and that was named after the newborn grandson.
22 November 1928 — Rabbi Schneider dies. Ida had died on 28 May of the same year. The double loss is the proximate occasion for the Mailers’ departure from Long Branch for Brooklyn later that fall.
