Anne Morse Barry
Norman Mailer's secretary in the early-to-mid 1960s, and the photographer of the 1964 author portrait of Mailer that appears on the back panel of the Dial Press first edition of An American Dream (15 March 1965, 65.7). Named in the multi-name dedication of The Presidential Papers (63.37, 8 November 1963): 'my secretary: Anne Morse Towel-Boy Barry.'
Anne Morse Barry served as Mailer’s secretary during the early-to-mid 1960s — the period of the Big Bite / Responses and Reactions column production, the Presidential Papers miscellany (1963), the An American Dream Esquire serial (January–August 1964), and the Dial Press first edition of An American Dream (15 March 1965). Mailer names her in the multi-name dedication of The Presidential Papers (63.37) — “my secretary: Anne Morse Towel-Boy Barry” — the seventh of the eight dedicatees, between his sister Barbara Jane Alson and the trio of “Sadie, and Hetty Diggs, and Every-Mae.”
Barry also photographed Mailer. The 1964 author portrait held at media/images/portraits/1964-norman-mailer-by-ann-barry.jpg (see CREDITS, 1964 ingest) is the photograph used on the back panel of the Dial Press first edition of An American Dream (15 March 1965), per the An American Dream Expanded sub-project (Lucas et al., Spring 2019, NMAC 5108 at Middle Georgia State University). The portrait shows Mailer in a 1964 sitting and is one of the better-known author photographs of the AAD period.
