American biographer; author of Norma Jean: The Life of Marilyn Monroe (1969). His publisher pressed the plagiarism charge over Mailer's Marilyn: A Biography (1973); Guiles later said he had never made such a charge.
Fred Lawrence Guiles, the American biographer, wrote Norma Jean: The Life of Marilyn Monroe (1969), the second of the prior Monroe lives behind Mailer’s Marilyn: A Biography (73.30). Guiles’s publisher, Mark Goulden, joined Maurice Zolotow in pressing a plagiarism charge against Mailer; the matter settled out of court, and in Mailer’s December 1973 advertisement (73.45) Guiles is reported to have said he never made the charge.
