Maurice Zolotow
American show-business biographer; author of Marilyn Monroe (1960). His complaint over Mailer's use of his material in Marilyn: A Biography (1973) was central to the year's plagiarism dispute, later settled; Zolotow ultimately retracted the charge.
Maurice Zolotow, the American biographer, wrote Marilyn Monroe (1960), one of the two prior lives of Monroe that Mailer drew on — and criticized — in Marilyn: A Biography (73.30). Zolotow charged that Mailer had used his material without authorization; the dispute (also involving Fred Lawrence Guiles) was settled out of court, and Zolotow retracted the plagiarism charge in the large New York Times Book Review advertisement Mailer composed in December 1973 (73.45). Mailer, for his part, judged Zolotow’s book “fewer facts than factoids.”
