John Leonard, the American critic and editor of the New York Times Book Review, was a sympathetic reader of Mailer in the early 1970s. His Book Review essay “Happy Birthday, Norman Mailer!” (18 February 1973) prompted Mailer’s reply “The Morning After” (73.10); he wrote the introduction to the hardcover St. George and the Godfather; and he presented Mailer with the Edward MacDowell Medal at Peterborough on 18 August 1973 (73.35).
