Excerpts from Mailer’s acceptance speech for the Edward MacDowell Medal (awarded 18 August 1973; see 73.35), printed in The MacDowell Colony: Report for 1973 (published April or May 1974) on pages 12–13, with John Leonard‘s introduction: ”… So the novelist … is out there … to deal with life as something that God did not give us as eternal and immutable, but rather gave us [as] something half-worked.” A slightly different excerpt appears in the preface to Some Honorable Men (76.5), and Mailer drew on the speech again for the foreword to The Time of Our Time (98.7); a fuller excerpt with Leonard’s introduction is in the Colony’s 1994 booklet Medal Day at the Colony.
