Lillian Ross
Long-time New Yorker staff writer whose unsigned 1948 profile of Mailer, "Rugged Times", began "Mailer's lifelong friendship with Lillian Ross" (Lennon 48.12).
Ross’s unsigned New Yorker “Talk of the Town” profile “Rugged Times” (23 October 1948) was Mailer’s first substantive New Yorker treatment and the start of a relationship that lasted until Mailer’s death in 2007. The piece discussed the Wallace campaign and the reception of The Naked and the Dead; Lennon notes Mailer’s characteristic correction: “‘propositions’ should be ‘proportions’ in the penultimate sentence”.
