The New Yorker
The New Yorker gave Mailer an early "Talk of the Town" profile on 23 October 1948, "Rugged Times", written (unsigned) by Lillian Ross — marking the beginning of Ross's lifelong friendship with Mailer and the start of a long if sometimes contentious relationship between Mailer and the magazine.
The New Yorker of 23 October 1948 ran “Rugged Times” (48.12), the Ross profile that covered the Wallace campaign and the reception of The Naked and the Dead. An earlier unsigned review of NAD in The New Yorker had pronounced the novel “closer to Tolstoy than to Crane or Remarque” — a line used in Rinehart’s advertising (see media/images/ephemera/1948-nad-ad-1.jpg).
