Life, the American picture weekly, was Mailer’s chief magazine venue at the turn of the decade. It serialized the moon-shot material later gathered as Of a Fire on the Moon (69.81, 69.83, 70.1) and, on 19 March 1971, published “Ego” (71.14), his account of the first Ali–Frazier fight. Per Mailer, Life and the book together earned him $450,000 from all sources (71.21).
