Shavertown, PA: Sligo Press, 2004.

Seventy-six of Mailer’s letters, from September 1963 to 1969, spanning the conception of An American Dream, its serial composition in eight monthly installments for Esquire, its publication in book form by Dial Press in March 1965, and its reception. Drawn from the Norman Mailer Papers at the Harry Ransom Center and edited with Mailer’s own corrections of fact and interpretation, the letters are the fullest record of how he worked under the pressure of the serial, and of the year in which, in Lennon’s argument, he first gave a major character his own deepest concerns and beliefs.
