“Backstage with Esky” was Esquire’s recurring editorial column, named for “Esky,” the magazine’s pop-eyed mascot. The April 1953 installment carries comment from Mailer on Barbary Shore (51.1), on “The Language of Men” (53.2) — his first story for the magazine, appearing in the same issue — and on his 1949–50 stint as a screenwriter in Hollywood.
