1953
A short-fiction year lived mostly at the writing desk. In April, "The Language of Men" (53.2) appears in Esquire — the first of more than forty Mailer appearances in that magazine — alongside an Esquire interview (53.1); two more stories follow in London periodicals ("Pierrot," 53.3; "The Notebook," 53.4). Mailer keeps working on The Deer Park, and he and Adele travel to New Orleans, where he takes peyote "for the first and last time."
The year at the desk
1953 is a year without a Mailer book — Barbary Shore two years behind him, The Deer Park two years ahead — and the published work is all short: four stories and a magazine interview, while the novel-in-progress occupies him.
April — the Esquire debut
April — “The Language of Men” (53.2), a story drawn from Mailer’s 1946 service as an Army cook in occupied Japan, appears in Esquire — “the first of over 40 Mailer appearances in this magazine”. The same April issue runs “Backstage with Esky” (53.1), an editor’s interview in which Mailer comments on Barbary Shore, the new story, and his 1949–50 Hollywood stint.
April–May — “Pierrot” (53.3), a story about a prototype Greenwich Village bohemian, appears in the London magazine World Review; Mailer later reworks it as “The Patron Saint of MacDougal Alley” in Advertisements for Myself.
Summer — The Cornhill
Summer — “The Notebook” (53.4), a sketch “written in an hour” about writers as perpetual observers, appears in The Cornhill Magazine (London), no. 996.
New Orleans — peyote
Mailer and Adele visit New Orleans, where he takes peyote for the first and last time.
Dissent (a dating discrepancy, resolved)
ProjectMailer’s Important Dates records Mailer becoming a contributing editor of Dissent in 1953, remaining until 1961. Lennon’s Works entry 54.1, however, is explicit: Mailer’s first Dissent appearance was the magazine’s second number, issued 1 April 1954, and he served on the editorial board “from 1954 until the mid-80s.” This register follows Lennon and places the Dissent relationship under Days 1954; the Important Dates 1953 entry appears to be in error on both the starting year and the end date.
