The Essential Mailer: Author Norman Mailer Talks about His New Novel, the Irish, and His Love for Chicago
Eugene Kennedy's interview in the Sunday Chicago Tribune Magazine, 9 September 1984, conducted amid the Tough Guys Don't Dance tour. Lennon calls it perhaps Mailer's longest utterance on the Irish.
“The Essential Mailer,” Eugene Kennedy‘s article-interview, ran in the Sunday Chicago Tribune Magazine on 9 September 1984 (23–25, 28–29), conducted in the midst of the Tough Guys Don’t Dance tour. Lennon judges it “perhaps Mailer’s longest utterance on the Irish” — Kennedy, a Chicago writer and longtime Mailer friend who had drawn him out on theology the year before (83.45), here turning the talk to Irish character and Mailer’s affection for Chicago. The piece was reprinted in 1988 (88.6; see also 68.26).
Its title coincides with that of the 1982 British omnibus The Essential Mailer (82.19) but is unrelated to it.
