Cannon Films, the production company run by Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, was the engine of Mailer’s mid-1980s movie work. It financed the film of Tough Guys Don’t Dance, which Mailer adapted and directed in Provincetown in the fall of 1986 for a roughly $5 million budget (86.36) and a seven-week shoot, releasing it in 1987. Cannon also produced Jean-Luc Godard’s King Lear, in which Mailer and his daughter Kate had agreed to appear (Mailer wrote a script Godard ultimately did not use; 86.29).
