French New Wave filmmaker; for his Cannon Films King Lear (1987) Mailer wrote a script Godard ultimately discarded and agreed to appear with his daughter Kate, before withdrawing.
Jean-Luc Godard, the French New Wave director, crossed paths with Mailer through Cannon Films in the mid-1980s. Mailer wrote a screenplay for Godard’s King Lear and agreed to play a Lear-like Mafia don opposite his daughter Kate, but the collaboration fell apart — Godard did not use Mailer’s script, and Mailer withdrew from the production (86.29, 87.4). Mailer spoke of Godard repeatedly while promoting his own Tough Guys Don’t Dance film, and the two appeared together at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival (87.6).
