Adeline Lubell Naiman, a college friend of Mailer’s sister Barbara, met Mailer in 1946. As an editor at Little, Brown in 1947 she argued — unsuccessfully, against Bernard DeVoto — for the acceptance of The Naked and the Dead, which was published the following year by Rinehart. Mailer addressed her affectionately as “Lub”; his 5 November 1963 letter to her (in the Letters collection) reports the An American Dream serial deal and his new life with Beverly Bentley.
