Diana Trilling, the American literary and cultural critic, was among Mailer’s earliest serious readers — her note on The Naked and the Dead appeared in Partisan Review in 1948 — and one of his most durable, returning to him in “The Radical Moralism of Norman Mailer.” She was a panelist at the “Dialogue on Women’s Liberation” at Town Hall on 30 April 1971, and her essay on the evening in We Must March My Darlings (1977; 77.14) is, in Lennon’s judgment, the best report of it.
